Influences

Among the most influential artists to me at present is Willem de Kooning. I look at "Asheville" 1949, oil on illustration board, 25.5" x 32" (64.7cm x 81.2cm) and I am drawn into his view of an aspect of his life in 1949. While my logical mind races over the surface, hunting for form and meaning, my eyes stop at certain points where scratches or blends or hard-edges or overlays tell a story of de Kooning's feelings, feelings that the "Asheville" experience provoked within him. Deeper than logical analysis, a part of me senses de Kooning's feelings.

I have listed twenty artists whose paintings I find particularly fascinating and illuminating. Interact and let me know who inspires you...

"There is beauty, frustration, calm meandering of a line then a burst of change of direction or colour; there's a door, a mirror, an eye, a tent... All of these feelings, and objects that convey feelings, have meaning to me as the viewer. 1949 has become 2008.
This is a remarkable event. Such is the power of art.
That's how I see it..."
